Joshua 24:14-15 (ESV)
“Now, therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Today's scripture references serving more than one master. Most people think of this as serving idols such as material items or not serving God with a pure heart. However, I offer another perspective that sometimes we idolize fear. When I am speaking to serving God in fear, it's not fearing the Lord as the scripture speaks to but rather fear that God will not see you through your situation. There are times in life when we let fear take over us because either we have experienced the same situation before and we think that things will never get better. Other times, we let fear dictate the outcome because it is a new and challenging situation. Either way, we start to serve God and function in a spirit of being fearful about the outcome versus faithful! I encourage you to pray this prayer: Lord, as I continue to trust You not only in my current situation but also on life’s journey, I choose to serve in faith. I will continue to pray as Joshua 24:15 reads, “Choose for yourselves this day who you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in who land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Yesterday, today, and tomorrow as a woman or man of faith who has been called, I promise that I choose to serve and trust you. I will continue to move forward in faith because I already know that You have given me the victory. Amen.
