Do the colors have a meaning?

Some people have wondered why orange is F.I.R.E.'s main color. Orange offers emotional strength in difficult times. It helps us to bounce back from disappointments and despair, assisting in recovery from grief. It is optimistic, uplifting and rejuvenating to our spirit by restoring balance. It frees the spirit of its limitations, giving us the freedom to be ourselves while encouraging self-respect and respect of others. Most importantly it is the FIRE of God, deliverance, and passionate praise.

January Free Monthly Group Workout Video

If you missed the first workout of 2017, check out the full workout video. Be sure not to miss out on our free monthly Temple Talk on January 20 at 7:00p.m. We opened the group workout with a meditation on The Year of Completion, which will be our Temple Talk topic this month! You can login at  https://zoom.us/j/680646110

2017 The Year of Completion

As you begin this year, I encourage you to develop four areas while striving for completion. First, your emotional health, second your spiritual health, third your physical health, and fourth your intellectual health. These four target areas are key to becoming whole. Additionally, wholeness in these areas necessitate completion because it is usually these areas that we struggle in the most. Whether you are aiming to complete a degree, a health management goal, develop your prayer life, or better understand your emotional self, now is the time to make it happen!

I encourage you to let the trials and tribulations of 2016, 2006 or even 1996 stay in the past. Forgive to become free, let go to become liberated, and ascend to achieve. It's time to go higher, no more mediocrity, excuses, or being your own roadblock. The time is now! Healing is now! Freedom is now! Love is now! Peace is now! Joy is now! Happiness is now! Authenticity is now!

The Prison to School Pipeline

This article highlights five individuals who are changing the statistics on the outcome of education for incarcerated individuals. Spelman College and University of Michigan Law School Alum GeDa' Jones Herbert is the site manager at Fresh Lifelines for Youth, a nonprofit that has a 12-week program for system-involved youth. Read about the great work that she and others are doing below, as they are the true definition of F.I.R.E.!

These five alumni—lawyers, educators, analysts—are working to improve the part of the pipeline that receives less attention: the one leading from incarceration back to the classroom. And from there—with some work—to a brighter future.

CHRISTINA GRANT is assistant superintendent of Philadelphia's alternative schools and has placed a big bet on the power of career and technical education to improve life prospects for incarcerated youth. Will it pay off?

EMILY FOX is drafting an updated Juvenile Justice Local Action Plan for the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families.

GEDÁ JONES HERBERT teaches students about the law and how to navigate it, even in a system that often seems set up against them.

RACHEL BRADY is working to ensure incarcerated students with disabilities are receiving the same accommodations they would receive at school if they weren’t in custody.

RAHEIM SMITH is a special education teacher in Brooklyn serving adolescents awaiting trial and those already sentenced to detention.

F.I.R.E. Celebrates Akilah Johnson

Today as I opened up Google to search the internet, their picture caught my attention. Immediately, I clicked on it and was drawn to read the article about the Google Doodle winner. As I was reading about the contest and Akilah Johnson, the winner, I immediately said to myself, she's a F.I.R.E.!

Akilah, a sophomore at Eastern Senior High School in Northeast Washington, D.C. unapologetically expressed her culturally rich lifestyle through art. She is an example of the mission of F.I.R.E. by being a Fearless Individual Resistant to Entrapment of being culturally muffled!

What Exactly is F.I.R.E.?

Many of you have been wondering, what is the fitness towel, what are the empowerment and devotional blogs, and what exactly is F.I.R.E.?!

I want to take the time to formally introduce F.I.R.E. (Fearless Individuals Resistant to Entrapment), which was created to help motivate people to become strong, capable, and adept life-changers and mountain-movers, by coaching them to break all their ceilings and reach new levels in life! F.I.R.E. was formally created in 2008, when I started speaking to youth and young adult groups about establishing and maintaining a healthy self-image. Through F.I.R.E., individuals were awakened to their purpose via encouragement, motivation, transformation, and empowerment, which enabled each person to push through their setbacks and roadblocks and avoid being deflated and discouraged. Ultimately, each person took away an understanding that they too are adept, capable, insightful life-changers, and mountain-movers.

During 2015, God placed on my heart to drive home the importance of maintaining a healthy temple, inclusive of the mind, body, and spirit. Later that year, in the summer, He forged a partnership between Erin Haywood and myself to be the co-founders of One Temple Fitness, which is a brand under the company F.I.R.E.

The mission of One Temple Fitness is to stimulate the mind, strengthen the body, and stretch the spirit by addressing mental health, providing affirmations, engaging in workouts, and meditating on the holy word. One Temple Fitness focuses on breaking barriers that hinder individuals from living a healthy lifestyle by engaging them in interactive discussions and motivating workouts. These stimulated discussions will be based on accountability, responsible decision making, addressing adversity, goal setting, and mental health, just to list a few.

Tweets for the Soul: When Life Falls Apart

Thema Bryant-Davis has done it yet again! After reading Thriving in the Wake of Trauma: A Multicultural Guide, I was excited to read her next work! She took an innovative approach to transform lives using 21st century technology! Taken from her own healing journey, clinical expertise, and intrinsic resource as an Womanist Theologian, she uses "twitter therapy" as a launchpad for inner wisdom to enter into our daily lives. She divides the book into several topics, one being, "When Things Fall Apart," and provides little golden nuggets like, "No more running, hiding, avoiding, denying. Walking through it is the way to get through it. Face it so you can be healed." As a fellow mental health professional, this statement sums up the very mindset that is needed for transformation to be ignited inside of one's self. Therefore, I encourage you to not only read this book but engage in "twitter therapy" so your mind can be renewed, rejuvenated, and reinvigorated to jump start the transformation inside of yourself!

The Journey of 1 Temple Fitness

In the beginning of June 2015, after a conversation with many about fitness and thoughtful reflection, I was inspired to hold a free 6 week mind, body, and spirit fitness camp.

I branded "1 Temple Fitness" under F.I.R.E. because we only get one body and we need to ensure that we are exercising our temples daily through the:
1. Mind ~ working out with others provides stimulating conversations, and spiritual and physical exercises alters the way we think;
2. Body ~ the physical exercise usually lends to healthy eating;
3. Spirit ~ the spiritual reflection which will occur during the warm-up enables growth.

During the 6 weeks, a partnership was formed with @fitgirllife_23, who hosted meet up groups to discuss healthy living. In October 2105, we hosted our first group workout. As our journey continues with all of you, we hope that you too will continue to transform your mind, body, and spirit!

Upcoming in November 2015, we are doing a 21 Day 1 Temple Fitness Cleanse. If you are interested in participating in this free mind, body, and spirit cleanse, contact me for details!

In love and service,

Ms. Gimel, F.I.R.E. founder

10 Steps to Dating With a Purpose

With 4 weddings on the horizon between now and December, I felt compelled to start this conversation in the F.I.R.E. community. In 2015, one may frequently hear, "dating nowadays is different" and "the times have changed." Yet, just because times have changed doesn't mean it has changed in the right direction. Madam Koverage (madamkoverage.com), wrote a great blog post, "Dating with a Purpose" that listed 10 steps to help men and women date with a purpose. Below are Madam Koverage's 10 steps (the ones highlighted in bold, the F.I.R.E. community have explored). Check out the full article by clicking on Source below to read more about the steps and their importance.

  1. Keep God first.
  2. Keep your legs closed.
  3. Are you truly happy with yourself?
  4. Be ready to let the past hurt go.
  5. Make a list of what you like, what you are open to, what you won't budge on etc.
  6. Be HONEST and communicate.
  7. Be careful on what you post on social media.
  8. Keep things fun and fresh.
  9. Be intentional with your words, thoughts, and actions.
  10. DO NOT abandon your friends and people around you.

You Have Been Revealed - "I See You"

This past Saturday, June 13, 2015 I was the Keynote Speaker for the ASCEND graduation for the Theta Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I read this poem as part of my address and the students requested it. Therefore I figured, it was time to share with the F.I.R.E. community.

You Have Been Revealed - "I See You"

You cut me down with your evil eyes
You talk behind my back with your bitter twisted lies
All while waltzing around your crystal stairs without a care

But just know I see you

You fail me and say I can do extra-credit
You reject me and say you’ll never get it
All while smiling in my face saying I am here for you

But just know I see you

You say my writing does not make any sense
You discount the fact that I know how to change a dollar into cents
All while you formulate germane critiques just to meet the minimal need but only to say she’s so in need

But just know I see you

You sit around the table conversing with the intention of subverting
You dismiss my accomplishments
All while asserting if it wasn’t for me there would be no you

But just know I see you

You walk out of the room as I enter
You say my look is wild and edgy and I am a little self-centered
All while you encourage me to be me and stay true to myself and not be sad and blue

But just know I see you, I see you, I see you, You have been revealed

Time to take the mask off
The play is over and no you are not getting a round of applause
Because you have been revealed

My teacher, my preacher, my mentor, my mother, my father, my sister, my brother, my cousin, my best-friend, my boyfriend, my girlfriend, my ex-friend, my ex-lover, my ex, my next…..roadblock, hindrance, barrier, bully, discourager, liar, cheater, deceiver, heart-breaker, enemy or friendenemy

You have been revealed

So just know next time you come around here with your cunning eyes telling your cute little lies whispering sweet nothings that will only lead to my demise…You have been revealed and I see you

And now that I have seen you, I can truly see me! My worth, my love, my joy, my peace, my freedom, my sanity, my equality, my value, my purpose, my mission, my all, my wholeness

So although it took a while for me to realize and believe the real you that I was seeing, now that I see you, I see me and I have been revealed, relieved, revitalized, and renewed

It's Not "Pitch Perfect" It's "Pitch Proficiency"

Many of us have heard the saying "Practice Makes Perfect" but I'd like to say that "Practice Produces Proficiency." As human beings, we are imperfect so striving for perfection can lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. It is important that we aim to strive for proficiency, "a high degree of competence or skill" instead of perfection, "having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics," because we will never have all of the required or desired qualities but we can possess competence.

Now, I know someone reading this may say, but what is the difference? Well, that is a great question you ask! Practicing with the mindset of, "I practice because I want to sharpen my skill and be my best self" is different than "I practice so I can be flawless." Aiming for proficiency does not mean that you will never be THEE BEST or  #1, it means that you do not have to drive yourself insane in the process.

Today, I encourage you to work hard, do your absolute best, and strive for proficiency, because trust me, it'll take the pressure off and ultimately lower your cortisol levels!

Achieving Work-Life Balance By Incorporating Self-Care Practices

At the annual Association of Black Women in Higher Education (ABHWE) writing retreat, I gave a presentation on Achieving Work-Life Balance By Incorporating Self-Care Practices. At the end of my workshops, I usually sum up the presentation through a mantra. Below is the mantra from this workshop and I hope you find it insightful and inspiring.

Today I choose to say, I am a woman who understands the importance of work-life balance, by recognizing and fulfilling MY identified priorities! I am unapologetically on the road to achieve this balance through self-care practices by:
Life by
Cherishing my
Authenticity by
Embracing ME!
I know this road will not occur over night but since I am reminded that life is short and some aspects of life are not rubber, I am committed to achieving a work-life balance by incorporating self-care!

Yik Yak, This and That: Social Media & You

As we all know, social networking and social media applications are here to stay. However, the question at hand is what purpose is it serving in and for your life? Some individuals use these sites/applications to either further their career or connect with friends and family. Others use social mediums to emotionally and psychologically bully others.

On March 10, 2014, CNN posted an article about a new application, Yik Yak. This application creates anonymous chatrooms, where hundreds of users may connect based on their GPS location. Although this application was designed for college students to use as a virtual bulletin board, it has now become a vehicle for cyber bullying for high school students (for more information please click on Source below).

Yik Yak is not the first application that was created for a positive purpose but turned into a negative means, and it certainly will not be the last! This post is a call to action to end all cyber bullying. Recently, we have seen cyber bullying spiral out of control with all age groups. Cyber bullying not only affects a person's self-esteem, but it can also lead to suicide and depression.

As an individual who wants to be a F.I.R.E. the below steps are key:

  1. Take personal responsibility for your actions
  2. Do not bring others down to build yourself up
  3. Take leadership roles and speak out against bullying and cyber bullying
  4. Check yourself, before you wreck yourself or someone else - Think before you speak, tweet, post, download or press send

If you or someone you may know are bullying or being bullied, please contact me for resources to help end this vicious cycle.
