The Connection Between Social Justice and Mental Health - One Temple Fitness Co-Founders

For the month of February in honor of Black History Month, we are discussing the connection between social justice and mental health.  

According to House Bill Resolution 194, it reads: Resolved, That the House of Representatives—
(1) acknowledges that slavery is incompatible with the basic founding principles recognized in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal;
(2) acknowledges the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery and Jim Crow;
(3) apologizes to African Americans on behalf of the people of the United States, for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow; and
(4) expresses its commitment to rectify the lingering consequences of the misdeeds committed against African Americans under slavery and Jim Crow and to stop the occurrence of human rights violations in the future. 

Although the house bill has recognized the impact of slavery and post slavery, what has occurred to remedy the effects? What outlets do we have when processing and expressing our emotions when discussing the daily traumas we face? It feels at times that we are constantly fighting for our humanity and we are told to not "call out" systems of oppression. However, as Bishop Desmond Tutu says, “My humanity is bound up in yours for we can only be human together,” thus it is necessary to have this conversation because it is a we-humanity problem. This month we are focusing on the connection between mental health and social justice because until we are seen as human beings in society and until society recognizes healing from a collective approach, we cannot begin the discussion on how our experiences contribute to our mental health.
